Description

GEORGE T. STONE owns one of the most valuable and beautiful estates
in Tama county, located in section 28, Richland township. He is· truly
a man of affairs in his community, and has served his fellow citizens in
office since reaching the age of maturity, including six years as a township
clerk and four years as assessor in Poweshiek county, while at the present
time he is serving Richland township as a trustee. Of late years he has
voted with the Republican party.
Mr. Stone was born in (;)learfield county, Pennsylvania., May 18, 1854,
and is a son of T. L. Stone. The latter was born in Derbyshire, England,
in 1827, and when twelve years of age he came to the United States and
located at Clearfield Bridge, in Clearfield county, Pennsylvania. During
ten or twelve years he was employed as a teamster for a lumber company
operating a general store and lumber business there, and he hauled goods
over the Allegheny mountains with a six horse team in the days when it
was customary to drive the lead horse with a jerk line and ride the wheel
horse. Mr. Stone married a na.tive daughter of that county, Priscilla
Turner, born in 1830, and in February of 1866 they came with their family
to Tama county, Iowa, and became the owners of forty acres of land two
miles southo·f Tama City. Later Mr. Stone sold that place and bought
land in Poweshiek county, but after a time returned to Tama county and
bought the farm now owned by his son George. He died in Ohelsea, Iowa,
May 25, 1895. Of the four born to T. L. and Priscilla Stone, three are
living, namely: George T., mentioned below; Edwin, a resident of Belle
Plaine, Iowa; and John, whose home is East Grinnell, in this state. After
the death of his first wife, T. L. Stone again married, his second ",ife
being Sarah Wisor, of Clearfield county, Pennsylvania, who died and left
.one son, Curten F., who is now deceased.
George T. Stone purchased his father's old homestead after his death
in 1895, which farm contains two hundred and forty acres of the finest
farming land in the entire state of Iowa. Since buying the farm, MIl'.
Stone has dug wells and piped water to the house, barns, yards, etc., laying
one hundred and thirty rods of pipe to differ~nt parts of the farm, as well
as erecting a wind mill. He also built a cistern with a capacity of three hundred
barrels of water. The well and the cistern supply the entire property
with an abundance of water for stock. He also has one of the finest 01'-
·chards in' the county and raises considerable fruit, but only for home use,
and he follows a general line of farming and stock-raising. He now has
about sixteen head of registered Short-horn cattle and one of the finest
·dukes to be found. in the county of Tama, and he is also a large raiser of
thoroughbred Plymouth Rock chickens, of which he has sold as high as
·seventy-five in a year.
Mr. Stone married Nina Wray, who was born in Minnesota, December
14, 1861, a daughter of Caleb and Sarah (Emancla) Wray. The
father, born in the state of New York, died in the year of 1862, and the
mother was born in the same commonwealth in' 1836, and died in 1908. In
the family of Mr. and Mrs. Wray were two children, and the younger,.
AliceWray Beers, is residing in Brooklyn, Iowa. 'Mr. and Mrs. Stone
have become the p~rents of seven children: Ernest yv., Clara Alta, Frank
T., Harry I., Eleanor A., Lucy T. and Nina Irene. Mr. Stone belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Mrs. Stone is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church.
