A HISTORIC gentleman's bowling club is celebrating its 100th birthday with a letter from the Queen.
The Liverpool Bowling Club in Wavertree was opened in June 1902 to provide private members with everything a gentleman would require.
Six merchants from the city planned a luxurious club featuring a billiard room, bar, cards room and reading room.
As well as bowling, of course.
Patrick Pearson, of the club, said:
"We have received a letter from Her Majesty to commemorate our 100th birthday.
"It is a wonderful occasion in the club's history to be celebrating such a huge milestone.
"I wonder if the merchants who set up the club all those years ago ever imagined that one day their ancestors would be holding a dinner to honour 100 years?" Merchants Robert Allmey, Richard Bradley, Charles Brockhill, Charles Harris, Alexander Henderson and Christopher Lee founded the club in October 1901.
The original site was planned for Greenbank Drive, but the founders decided that Liverpool city council was charging too much for the land and bought the current plot in Church Road.
They were not the only people who were too pricey.
Club records show the chairman had planned to place an article in the Liverpool Mercury and Echo on Tuesday, January 7, 1902.
But the plan was scrapped because it was "too expensive." The official opening of the green and pavilion at the club took place on Saturday June 21, 1902.
The club's current members gathered to toast the founders and celebrate their centenary.
Countdown to founding of the club July 1901? Meeting at 14 Cook Street, Liverpool, decides to form bowling club.
October ? Petition via Ford & Co solicitors of 46 Bedford Road, London, to register the Liverpool Bowling Club.
Friday, November 1? Estimate from Mr Wm Rowlands for pounds 265 to lay the green.
November 30 ? Contract signed to buy the land at Church Road, Wavertree.
February 5, 1902 ? Greenmaker Mr Rowlands tells the board he cannot proceed because of severe frost, but can he have some money? Board pays pounds 75.
Monday, April 28 ? The green is finally completed and Mr Rowlands is appointed greenkeeper.
Friday, May 30 ? A dozen bowls are bought.
Saturday, June 21 ? The official opening.
