Individual Details
Lizzie S. MCLAIN
(8 Feb 1870 - 6 Feb 1912)
That death was premeditated was not doubted and the coroner rendered a decision accordingly. In making an investigation, he found the evidences of the carbolic acid and also found that Mrs. Breniman had made preparation for death. Every stitch of clothing she wore was absolutely spotless and some of the articles were new.
As to the cause of the suicide, the coroner did not secure definite information. Mrs Breniman had been a sufferer from eczema, but signs of this ailment had almost entirely disappeared. If she left any word as to the cause of her act, it had not been discovered.
Lizzie had been born in Ill, and later went to Brooklyn, Ia., where she married G.H. Carter. He died in Iowa and his widow and little daughter went to Fort Collins, Co., shortly afterward.
She was a woman of refinement and highly educated and she had a host of friends in Ft. Collins. She was the guardian for her daughter, Vern, aged 15, to whom she left an estate valued at about $7,000. The son, Forrest was about 10 when she died.
The remains were shipped to Montezuma, Iowa, for burial beside here first husband, Mr. Carter. Funeral services were held in the home of her sister, Mrs John Hutchinson.
