Mr. Helps, manager of the tire department at Co-op Oil Co Garner, who served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1954-1957, and was a member of the American Legion, is survived by his wife, Sylvia; three daughters, DeEtta, Denise, and Dixie, and a son, Darrel, all at home; parents, Mr. & Mrs. Dwight Helps, Klemme; two sisters, Mrs. Russel (JoAnn) Verhelst, Klemme; and Mrs. Lowell (Eunice) Broer, New Providence; and a brother, Raymond, Klemme

Death
The Family KillerDad was only 42 years old when he died of cancer. I was only 10. He fought diligently for 2 years. I don't remember how many surgeries he had or how much treatment he endured. I do, however, remember the colostomy bags, his once overweight body reduced to skin and bones and the day he died. It was too much for my young brain to fully appreciate. The worst part is I wasn't old enough to know him.
