Biography
The ancestors of Esther Stubbs followed the geographic line by which many Quakers had come into the South Atlantic Watershed. Her father, John Stubbs, was the son of John and Esther (Maddocks) Stubbs. They were members of Cane Creek Friends Meeting in North Carolina. Some of the Maddocks family had come from Pennsylvania and settled near the Eno River in Orange County, North Carolina. Their certificates of membership were presented to Cane Creek, the nearest Friends Meeting, On 1-X-1768 John Stubbs requested a certificate to South Carolina. This was a year after Esther Stubbs and children received a certificate to Fredericksburg Monthly Meeting, in the area of the present city of Camden, South Carolina.Esther (Stubbs) Newlin's mother, Jane (Jones) Stubbs was the eighth child in the large family of Frances and Sarah Jones. She was born in Orange County, North Carolina. Cane Creek records give the names and dates of birth of twelve children and these are repeated in the records of Bush River Meeting in South Carolina. On 1-III-1755 they were received by Cane Creek Meeting from East Nottingham Meeting in Pennsylvania. Their membership remained at Cane Creek until 3-S-1772 when they went to Bush River Meeting, near Newbury, South Carolina. The Wrightsboro records show thirteen children with the last born 7-V-1773. It seems quite evident that John Stubbs and Jane Jones were both members of the Wrightsboro Meeting (in Georgia) when they were married there in 1785. Though their marriage did not conform to the discipline of Friends they were not disowned. The minutes of Wrightsboro Meeting of 7-V-1785 indicate that John Stubbs was reported married to Jane Jones. The date of the marriage was not given.
On December 13, 1804, John and Jane (Jones) Stubbs presented their certificates of membership of themselves and their eight children, to the Miami Meeting. Four other Stubbs families were in the immigrant train on the eight hundred miles of road, in various stages of undevelopment, from Waynesboro, Georgia, on the Savannah River, to the Miami in Ohio. The records of this disintegrating Georgia Meeting indicate that forty-two persons must have made up the caravan for the long trek. Esther Stubbs, the oldest of the eight children, was then twenty-one years of age and must have been a vivacious young leader in this wagon train of men, women, children, and livestock.
In 1832, when her husband John died, Esther was left with nine of their twelve children still in her care. Two were married, and a third (John) had accidentally drowned at the age of three in 1821. Esther lived as a widow for more than 40 years, dying on February 1, 1873 at the age of nearly 86, probably at the home of her son, Joel, where she had been living for several years.
