Paul R. Stone, 88, of Grinnell died May 7, 2009, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 11, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, Grinnell Christian Church and the Rev. Christine Tinker, Mayflower Community, officiating. Pianist will be Lorna Lang and vocalist Stacy Haynes. Pallbearers will be Richard Stone, Mike Leonard, Jean Dongmo, Daniel Haynes, Doug See, Paul Rasmussen, John Horsley, Jeremy Smith, and Sgt. Tim McGlynn. Honorary bearers will be Reyne See, Becky Rasmussen, Melissa Leonard, Stephanie King, Laura Dongmo, Stacy Haynes, Kerry Horsley, and Dr. Ashley Smith. Burial will be in Pleasant Township Cemetery in Ewart.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and where the family will be present from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday afternoon. A Masonic service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Paul R. Stone Memorial Fund.
Paul was born August 3, 1920, in Grinnell, at St. Francis Hospital (the first baby boy born there), to Fred and Louise Farrand Stone. He graduated as Salutatorian from Malcom High School Class of 1937. After graduation he farmed with his dad until the early 1940's when he went to Buffalo, New York and was employed at an aircraft manufacturing plant during the war. Following the war he continued to farm with his father.
Paul was united in marriage to Joyce Roorda Ryken on January 6, 1951, in Grinnell, at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. W. J. Stewart. The couple farmed south of Malcom until 1970. After his years of farming he was employed by New York Life Insurance Co., All Star Ford, Grinnell College, and the Grinnell Water Treatment Plant.
Paul really loved his family and enjoyed sharing his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping and fishing, playing cards, and calling bingo. He was a life-time member of the Grinnell Elks and a 50 year Master Mason. He served as a Pleasant Township Trustee, and was a member of the Ewart Presbyterian Church, the Grinnell First Presbyterian Church, and the First Baptist Church in Grinnell.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Grinnell; his son, Lowell (Diana) Stone of Grinnell; four daughters, Marcia (David) King of Park View, Iowa, Mary (Charles) Stepanek of Grinnell, Marla Horsley of Grinnell, and Paula (James) Smith of Montezuma; ten grandchildren, Richard Stone of Conrad, Reyne (Doug) See and Becky (Paul) Rasmussen of Grinnell, Melissa (Mike) Leonard of Davenport, Stephanie King and her fianc'e, Sgt. Tim McGlynn of Boone, Laura (Jean) Dongmo of Lake Forest, California, Stacy (Dan) Haynes, Kerry Horsley, and John Horsley, all of Omaha, and Jeremy (Dr. Ashley) Smith of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania; and ten great-grandchildren, Alexia Stone, Ethan See, and Trent Rasmussen, all of Grinnell, Lexus Bloomer of Boone, Jordan Helvey of Springville, Utah, Logan, Andrew, and Justin Leonard, all of Davenport, Elijah Haynes of Omaha, and Serafina Dongmo of Lake Forest, California; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John; and an infant great-grandson, Andrew.
