Anecdote
COURTSHIP(As Mary recalls it)
"We met at the Ames Roller Rink, Ames, Iowa on a Friday night in early May 1950. My sister, Pat, and I were sitting together when Dick skated up and asked her to skate. She explained that she was waiting for her boyfriend and then he asked me to skate. We skated together several times and at the end of the evening he asked if he could give me a ride home.
The next week Dick called to ask me to a movie on Sunday evening. We began going out two or three times a week to ball games, movies, picnics, and roller skating. In July he asked me to go steady and gave me his high school class ring to wear.
When we started dating I was living with my parents in Ames and working as a secretary/librarian at Central Junior High School. Dick was spending the summer working at Iowa State University where he was a student. He was living at his fraternity house, Delta Sigma Phi.
That meeting at the roller rink was the beginning of a loving relationship that has lasted all these years."
Engagement
Our EngagementWritten by Mary in her diary.
November 1951
"On Saturday after noon, Oct. 20, 1951, Dick too me downtown Ames to Zales jewelry to make my choice of the rings he had picked out. It wasn't until the evening of Oct. 23 that I actually had Dick's diamond on my left hand, third finger. What a thrill! He picked me up at church where I had gone for a membership class. I received my ring between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. as we sat parked in his car at my parent's house. And for the record, Dick did actually propose.
The following Monday evening he passed cigars at his fraternity house and on Thursday I passed candy at my sorority. The Delta Sigma Phi fraternity members came to my house to serenade me as was theri custom for newly engaged couples. I thought that was especially nice of them and certainly something that Dick and I will remember the rest of our lives.
So here we are now - finace and fiancee. And it is just wonderful! The next step - husband and wife. That will make my life complete."
