Individual Details
Stephen E. Cantrell
(January 1, 1822 - 1910)
"Stephen E. Cantrell was born in January 1822 in Alabama. He accompanied his parents to Arkansas, where he married Sarah Johnson about 1846. She was born in 1827 in Tennessee. They moved to Texas in the late 1840's. We know that one son was born about 1850 in Milam County, but they were not on the census of Texas for that year. In the mid 1850's he moved his family back north and they were in Missouri for a short time where a son was born. Then to Arkansas, where a daughter was born in September 1857 (1859?) and then back to Texas, where his father had moved in the 1850's. In 1860 we find Stephen and his family recorded in Buchannan County, Texas and he was a farmer with personal property valued at $150. Buchannan County was formed in 1858 and the name was changed to Stephens County in 1861. We have not located Stephen in the 1870 census of Texas but we know that he was probably in the state as he was recorded in 1880, in the 4th Justice District of Burnet County. He was still a farmer. In addition to his wife, the household included his youngest son, Stephen R., and a seven year old boy named Albert who was listed as a grandson. In 1900, this Albert listed his month and year of birth as May 1874. He married Parilee Elkins 18 July 1897 in Falls County and in 1900, they were living in Pct. #4, Bell County. It is not known if this was a son of Cynthia or Robert. The children of James J. and William W. seem to be accounted for.
"Sarah died in the next 20 years and in 1900, Stephen ws living in the home of her daughter, Elizabeth Cantrell Spain in Tounship 1N, Rage 6W, Chicksaw Nation, Indian Territory. This was to become part of King Township, Stephen County, at statehood. Duncan, Oklahoma was located within the township. Stephen was 78 years of age and as he was not located on the 1910 census of Stephen County, we may asume he died in the area." (1900 Oklahoma census; 1880 Texas census; and Warren Cantrell, Killeen, Texas, as recieved from Bobby Steve Cantrell, Brownwood, Texas.)
