Reuben Cantrell
(November 12, 1833 - 1913)
"Reuben Cantrell (Elijah5, Jacob4, Isaac3, Joseph2, Richard1) was born in November 1833 in Georgia. In 1850, he was a farm laborer for his father in Marion County, Alabama. He married Sarah _______ about 1854 in Marion County. She was born in 1834 in Georgia. In 1860 they were recorded in the Eastern District of Marion County, P. O. Aston Store. He had real estate valued at $500 and personal property valued at $250. It appears that his first wife and three of their four children died during the war years.
"Reuben served in the Civil War in Company D, 1st Alabama Cavalry. He married Mary F. Sullivan about 1866. She was born 3 July 1845 in Alabama. She was the sister to the wives of Stephen L. and George D. Cantrell. Their wives were the daughters of Eli and Rebecca Lackey Sullivan.
"After the marriage, Reuben moved to Missouri where the first child was born and then to Hampton Township, Yellville, Marion County, Arkansas. Here he was a farmer in 1870 and he had real estate valued at $250 at that time. In 1880 they were recorded in Prairie Township, Boone County and he was listed as a minister. Our informant tells us that he was a Baptist minister and even in later years when he became quite blind, he continued to preach the gospel. Six children were at home in 1880. In 1900, Reuben and Mary were again recorded in Boone County, but their place of residence was in Bryon Township, and he still was listed as a minister. Two children were at home in 1910, they were recorded in Sugar Loaf Township and he owned a farm. He was then about 77 years of age, and where Mary had indicated in 1900 that eight of her nine children were living, she now listed seven living. They were both buried at the Cedar Grove Cemetery two miles west of Lead Hill off Highway 14."
