"Volney C. V. Cantrell's two wives were sisters and were daughters of a Baptist minister. Volney served in the Union Army, during the Civil War, for two years in Company H, 2nd North Carolina Regiment, being only fifteen years of age when he enlisted, together with his father and Uncle Levi. He and his family live at Horseshoe, North Carolina and many of this branch of the family live in this vicinity, where the elder members of the family located over a century ago."
