"James Edwards Cantrill graduated from Georgetown College and is an eminent lawyer and jurist, well known all over the country, and recognized as one of the most successful members of the bar in the south. He has been a life long Democrat and has represented Scott County in the Legislature and also in the state Senate. In 1879 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky. Helf the position of judge of the 14th Judicial District of Kentucky many years and has been judge of the Appellate Court since 1903.
"Following are excerpts from the BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA: "Captain James Edwards Cantrill ... enlisted under COlonel Humphrey Marshall in West Virginia about the time Generals Bragg and Kirby Smith were invading the state ... He served as Private, Captain and Major in the Confederate Army; participated in the terrible battles of Perryville and Stone River, besides minor engagements. After these battles Bragg fell back to Tullahoma, Tennessee, and Rosecrans took position at Murfreesboro. About this time Captain Cantrill was detailed with a Company for scouting service at the front of General Bragg's Army. He served faithfully in this arduous and dangerous duty during that winter, never in all that time sleeping within the picket lines. In the Spring his Regiment was assigned to General John H. Morgan's Command ... Judge Cantrill is a mason of high standing; a Knight Templar and Grand Junior of the Grand Commandery. He is a ready and forcible speaker and a writer of merit."
