Benjamin Cantrell
(Abt, 1768 - Abt, 1843)
"Benjamin Cantrell was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina, probably about 1768, and was a small boy when his parents moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina. At the time of the fighting in Ninety Six district, during the Revolution, he was a lad of about twelve years of age; it is said that while he was ploughing in the fields, that by lying with his ear to the ground he could distinctly hear the roar of the cannon. He appears in the census of 1790 as "Head of a family" in Spartanburg County. He married (1) Charity Legat; ten children; married (2) Polly Magness and (3) Hannah Powell. There were no children by either of the last marriages. About 1814 he moved with his family to Tennessee, near the present site of Smithville. A grant of land made to him at this time is recorded at Sparta, White County. He died in Warren County, Tennessee about 1843." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908 by Susan Cantrill Christie, pages 115 - 116.)
"Benjamin Cantrell was born in what was then Orange County, North Carolina. This area of his birth became Guilford County in 1770 and Rockingham County in 1785. Benjamin married 1st Charity Legat about 1788 in Spartanberg County, South Carolina. She was bornin 1770 in South Carolina. After rearing ten children, she died in Warren County, Tennessee in 1835. About 1806 he moved with his family to Tennessee. A grant of land was made to him in 1814. This land was located near the present town of Smithville in DeKalb County and was recorded at Sparta, White County, Tennessee. The land was located in a part of Warren County which became DeKalb County in 1837. In December of 1822, Benjamin was a member of the Old Bildad Church at Smithville.
