Mathias/Matthew Wallen/Walden

(Abt, 1770 - Bef 1840)

"That Matthew Wallen was a son of Thomas Walling born 1730 has not been proven. Matthew, Thomas, William, and Elisha Wallen were petitioners for forming Lee County, Virginia on October 25, 1792. Matthew Wallen is on the 1795 Lee County, Virginia Tax list and is shown as being over 16 years of age and possessing 2 horses. Matthew, James, Elisha, William and Joseph Wallen purchased land in Hawkins County, Tennessee (then Sullivan County, North Carolina) in 1790. In 1820, Matthew Wallen purchased 72 acres of land from Isaac Rice of McMinn County, Tennessee, thought to be his brother-in-law. The land was on the South side of Clinch River, Hawkins County, Tennessee, at Wallen's Bend and was next to the land of William Hurd." (Matthew Wallen family and descendants from David Miller, rdmrjm@@bellsouth.net>.)

"Elisha Wallen, the Longhunter" by Carolyn Wallin states that Amy Rice, daughter of Margery Wallen and Isaac Rice, married Mathias Walden, a cousin. Since all the children of Margery Wallen's brothers are documented except the children of Thomas Walling, it is speculated that Mathias/Matthew Wallen/Walden was a son of Thomas Walling born 1730.
