Allen Morton

(August 28, 1850 - January 8, 1928)

"Allen Morton came to Texas with his parents in 1872. He had known and fallen in love with Nancy Dulin, before moving to Texas. After living in Eastland County three years, Allen went back to Alabama and Georgia, and married Nancy in 1875. He brought her back to Texas to live on his parents' farm for the first few months before moving to his place two miles northwest of Eastland. Allen and Nancy had three children. They were Tobe Morton, Folia Mary Morton Thomas, and Gormon Morton. After several years they moved to the Pleasant Grove Community in Eastland County. Their place was two miles south of the cemetery. Several years later, they sold their farm in Pleasant Grove, moved to Eastland for two years, then purchased 100 acres of the original William Morton (his father) farm two miles northeast of Eastland.

"Allen and Nancy were Methodists. Before churches were built in the rural areas, they and the neighbors took turns having church services in their homes. Some times the Methodist Circuit Rider would be at the services. Nancy would put their four year old son, Tobe, to bed in the next room while church services were being held. He told on himself that he would kick on the wall until his mother came and scolded him - he also admitted that she should have spanked him.

"The Mortons were avid hunters. Allen did not hunt as much after his children were born, but his oldest son, Tobe, hunted with Allen's younger brothers. It was while hunting with his Uncle Bill that Tobe saw his first armadillo in 1898. The armadillo ran under an outcrop of rock. They could see the armadillo had no teeth, but Uncle Bill warned Tobe to be careful when he pulled him out that he might have a stinger on his tail. Even if there were no armadillos in Eastland County before 1898, other game was plentiful. Tobe always said he thought the timber wolves disappeared in Eastland County when the deer were killed out in the 1920's. The deer were restocked in the county in late 1940's and early 1950's.

"Allen had certain chores for his children to do. One of Tobe's chores was to build a fire in the mornings to cook breakfast. After a night of hunting, Tobe would be a little slow getting the fire built. When his sister heard their father scold him for hunting so late the night before, his told me that she worried that Tobe might never want to do anything but hunt. Tobe's ambition, when a boy, was to have the best hunting dog in the county. Not much ambition for a man that owned three farms and a 10,000 acre ranch when he passed away in 1954.

"I cannot remember my Grandmother and Grandfather Morton very well as they both passed away when I was small. I can remember seeing my grandmother in a wheelchair after she suffered a stroke. In can remember that my grandmother and my aunt were both good cooks. Meals at their house stayed in my mind more than any other one thing. My Aunt Folia told me that the first green vegetables they had every year were the asparagus and polk salad greens that grew wild in their pasture. Nancy lived about three years after suffering the stroke. She passed away in 1925. Soon after Nancy passed away, Allen sold the farm to Tobe. Allen and his daughter moved to Olden, Texas, where they lived until he passed away three years later." Allen Morton Death Certificate filed with the Texas Department of Health is #1499.

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Some researchers give the birthdate of Johnathan C. Morton as March 17, 1850 and his brother, Allen, as August 28, 1850, which could not be possible. It appears the Johnathan's birthdate was earlier, in late 1849, or Allen's birthdate was later in 1850 or early in 1851.)
