James Foster Gaines, Jr. was on the General Stewart Heintzleman (transport) and spent three years in the South Pacific, and was at Tarawa. He was discharged as Lieut. in April 1946. He was a dentist.
"Dr. J. F. Gaines, Jr., 89, of San Angelo, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Coleman Cemetery Pavilion. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Dr. J.F. Gaines, Jr. was born December 23, 1920 in Coleman, the son of Dr. James F. Gaines and Evelyn Cates Gaines. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School and Baylor Dental College in Dallas. He entered into the United States Navy as a Dental Officer. On February 14, 1981, he married Derah Lee. Dr. J. F. Gaines lived in Midland for many years, where he practiced dentistry, retiring in 1983. He then moved to Hideaway Lake for 20 years before moving to San Angelo eight years ago. Survivors include his wife, Derah Gaines of San Angelo; children, Jimmie Foster Gaines of Midland, Rosemary Swanson and husband, Murrey, of Midland, David Clark Gaines and wife, Connie, of Austin, Mark Maddison Gaines of Midland, Bruce Lee Gaines and wife, Kristi, of Lubbock; one step-daughter, Sheri Ferris and husband, Eric, of Argyle; one brother, Dr. Charles Gaines and wife, Lavera, of Midland; one sister, Bernece Marsh and husband, Frederick, of Conroe; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
