Thomas O. Judah

(August 20, 1844 - June 30, 1931)

"Thomas Judah, an old veteran of the Civil War who has had a failing for liquor created quite a sensation Saturday by turning the public square into a speed ring and attempting to break all former local records. Besides scaring a few of the spectators, the old soldier ran down Sheriff Ratliff, painfully wrenching his back. Both Chief Johns and Sheriff Ratliff attempted to stop the flying rig and Sheriff Ratliff missed his grip at the horses bridle and was struck by a buggy wheel. His back was wrenched and he had to be assisted to the jail where he is confined to his bed today. When the old veteran made his getaway, he put the horse into a higher speed and journeyed straight to the south. A warrent is out for his arrest." ( From the Bloomington "Telephone", Tues, Mar. 16, 1909.)

"Thomas O. Judah, 86 years old, Civil War veteran, passed away Friday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock at his home in Guthrie, five miles north of here, following a year's illness of heart complications. The deceased was born in Indiana to John and Mary Hedrick Judah and at the of his death was 86 years, 9 months, and 29 days old. He was first married to Susana Smith and a second time thirty-two years ago to Serepta Norman, who survives him. Mr. Judah was a retired lumberman. Mr. Judah served his country as a corporal in Company H, 117th regiment during the civil war, enlisting on July 16, 1863 and being honorably discharged February 24, 1865 [dhj note: this is probably an error and the year was probably 1864]. Later he returned to the service, enlisting as a private in Company A, 17th regiment on July 10, 1864 and being honorably discharged February 24, 1865." (The following is from the "Bedford Daily Times," exact date unknown.)
