"Samuel Nathanial Markland served in the U. S. Army from 1937 until 1942. He was a coal miner in Wise County, Virginia until 1952. At that time the mines were closing and he moved his family to Grant County, Indiana. There he was a tool and die maker for General Motors until he took early retirement because of Black Lung disease. He died of lung cancer. His interests included music, organ playing, woodworking, gardening and fishing."
