An accomplished land speculator. He bought and sold land in Jasper, Newton, and Troup counties Georgia, as well as Chambers and Tallapoosa counties in Alabama.

The land he built the "Hodnett Homestead" on in Frogeye, AL, was bought from his younger brother, Henry W. Hodnett.

James and Sarah raised six children of their own. In addition, they raised two grandsons, children of Benjamin Franklin "Henry" Hodnett, after his death in 1855.
