Isaac Newton Greer

(January 23, 1847 - April 30, 1934)

"State of Texas, County of Johnson. On this 22nd day of December 1880, appeared Isaac Newton Greer, aged 33 years, who declares he was a Landsman in Juliet Boat No. 4, who enlisted in the Naval Service of the United States at Monroe, Louisiana on the 11th day of April 1864, as a Landsman, and was honorably discharged on the 17th day of May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee; that his personal description is as follows: age 33 years; height, 5 feet 8 inches; complexion, dark; hair, dark; eyes, gray; that while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty at Fort Derusha, Louisiana, on or about the 15th dayof May 1864, he received a wound when carrying a box of shells upstairs for the use of a parrot gun, and falling in the attempt, which caused a contusion of the spine from which I have been permanently disabled ever since that time. This wound was received on U. S. Naval Steamer Choctaw. That he was treated as follows: U. S. Naval Hospital Boat Red Rover immediately after wound was received and U. S. naval Hospital at Memphis and from there to U. S. Hospital Boat No. 30 and from there re-transferred to Hospital at Memphis, Tennessee. (signed) Isaac Newton Greer. "Isaac Newton Greer declares that he is 65 years of age and a resident of Iowa Park, county of Wichita, state of Texas, and that he was enrolled at Monroe, Louisiana on the 11 day of April 1864, as a Landsman in U. S. S. Juliet in the services of the United States in the Civil war and was honorably discharged at Memphis, Tennessee on teh 17 may 1865. His personal description at enlistment was as follows: height, five feet seven inches; complexion, dark; color eyes, Brown; color of hair, brown; that his occupation was Farmer; that he was born January 23, 1847 at Union Parish, Louisiana. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Titus County, Texas 1875 to Johnson County, Texas 1878, to Wise County, Texas 1884, to Parker County, Texas 1889, to Wise County, Texas 1895, to Wichita County, Texas 1908. His post office address is Iowa Park R. F. D. #1, count of Wichita, state of Texas. (signed) Isaac N. Greer, 1st of July, 1912.

"On this 28 day of June, 1929, Isaac Greer makes the following declaration as an application for pension... That he is 82 years of age; that he was born January 23, 1847 at Union Parish, Louisiana. That he enlisted April 11, 1864 at Monroe, Louisiana in Navy vessel, Juliet. Discharged May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee, having served the United States in the Civil War. That his personal description at time of first enlistment was as follows: Height, 5 feet 6 inches; complexion, light; color of eyes, gray; color of hair, light reddish; occupation, farmer. That since leaving the service he has resided at Louisiana and Texas and his occupation has been farmer. That he requires the regular personal aid and attendance of another person and has required such aid and attandance since May 1, 1929 on account of the following disabilities: almost blind. "He married 3 times and fathered 24 children. (All are listed with their bith dates, as well as his wives and their marriage dates. Some of the marriage dates seem to be in error.)
