"James Hales was known as Jim, but various records give his middle name as Monroe or Franklin. He came to Drew County, Arkansas after 1850 from North Carolina, according to Juanita Mosley." (Dorothy J. Heald notes.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Census shows he was born in Arkansas.)

"The Hales Family Cemetery is located in Southwest Drew County on the Pharis Knowles Farm. J. M. Hales once owned the land and set aside one half acre for a family burial when his son died in 1906." (Majorie White Knowles.)
