Individual Details

Thomas Jones

(Bef 1740 - Bet 1810 and 1820)

Thomas Jones and his brother, Minitree Jones, were overseers of the plantation of Col. John Symne from 1773 to 1776 in Louisa County, Virginia. (LOUISA COUNTY TITHABLES AND Census 1743 - 1785.) Stephen (William?) Bourne lived adjacent to the plantation. Thomas and his wife, Bette, later lived on Stephens Creek in Grayson County and sold land there in 1804. He was probably born in Louisa County and died in Grayson County.

Thomas' age is based on the 1800 Tax List of Grayson County, Virginia: "Thomas Jones - 0 - 1 (horse)." Presumably he was tax exempt because of his age - 60 or over. (The Virginia Genealogist, July/September 1981, page 207)

Thomas is found on the 1810 Grayson County, Virginia tax list (shown as exempt, presumably because of his age), but was not found on the 1820 Grayson County tax list. Therefore, we assume he died between 1810 and 1820.

"Dec. 13, 1782 ... Surveyed for Thomas Jones 104 acres, south side of Iron Mountain, both sides of Stephens Creek." Same date and location "Surveyed for Thomas Jones, 400 acres of land by virtue of a certificate from the commissioners for the District of Washington Counties for 400 acres dated 3d of Sept. 1782, assigned to him by George Jones, lying in Montgomery County on the south side of Iron Mountain on both sides of Stephens Creek. James Newell -- Wm. Preston." This land was sold to Abner Jones, September 1804 by Thomas and Bette Jones ... 504 acres for $ 500.

"18 April 1803 ... Thomas Jone and Elizabeth, his wife, of Grayson County and Ephraim Garratson of county of Rockingham, state of North Carolina ... 106 acres for $ 112 on Eagle Bottom Creek. Witnessed by A. Jones, William Carrico, Jesse Vaughan, Thomas Cooper." (Grayson County, Virginia Deed Book 2, page 25)

"September 1811 ... Thomas Jones and Elizabeth to the M. E. Church trustees ... 2 acres on Stephens Creek for $ 2.00 ... shall cause to be erected and built thereon a house of place of worship for the use of the members of the M. E. Church in the United States. Witnessed by Isaac Moore, Peter Carrico, Joseph Carrico, Alex Atkins, Abel Carrico. Trustees were Wm Carrico, James Atkins, James Phillips and Peter Carrico." (Grayson County, VIrginia Deed Book 3, page 44.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Rosamond, Minitree and Naomi Jones were known children of Thomas and Bette Jones ... the others are possibly children. Other information about the descendants of Thomas Jones were found in Bruton Parish Church records, Williamsburg, Virginia; 1850 census of Grayson County, Virginia; The Douglas Register; Tombstones; B. F. Nucholls's PIONEER SETTLERS OF GRAYSON COUNTY, VIRGINIA; Bible records; and Wills of Grayson County. This information given by Patricia Surface of Tazewell, Virginia.)
