James Allen Griffith

( - )

"My grandfather was James Allen Griffith (son of Sarah Tennessee Griffith, grandson of John F. Griffith). I saw my grandfather only one time, when I was 5 years old. As you can see by the surnames, grandpa was "illegitimate". I hate that term; I've no doubt he was legitimately a human being... his life was justifiable, reasonable, etc. It's just that his parents were never married to each other. Because of this, he always had a "hang dog" appearance about him, according to one of his daughters (my mother.) He lived his entire life feeling a deep sense of shame and guilt; he died an early death as the result of alcoholism.

"I've never been able to find out who Grandpa's father was. The only story I've ever heard (from 2 different families, so I tend to think there must be some truth to it)... his daddy was a married man, "a big, red-haired Irish man named SMITH, possibly John"... My grandpa had very deepset eyes, and auburn hair with very deep waves in it; he was a very handsome man. (Susan McKenna, email: familytree2@juno.com>.)
