Don Foster Gaines

(September 6, 1942 - January 16, 1992)

"Don Gaines, 49, longtime resident of Waurika, died Thursday, January 16, 1992 at this home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church in Waurika. The Rev. Mike Smith, pastor and the Rev. Tommy Billings officiated. Burial was in the Waurika Perpetual Care Cemetery under the direction of the Willis C. Worley and Son Funeral Home in Waurika.

"Don Foster Gaines was born September 6, 1942 in Coleman, the youngest of two children born to Dennis and Grace Gaines. He grew up and attended schools in Coleman. In 1962 he moved to Lubbock and attended Texas Tech College, later moving to Abilene where he attended McMurry College. Mr. Gaines spent several years in the medical supply field in Waco and Abilene. He was the Director of Purchasing for the Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene. On March 25, 1972 he was married to Velda Duncan in Mesquite and the couple made their home in Dallas where he continued to work in the medical supply field. In 1974 the family moved to Jefferson County (Oklahoma). In 1976 Mr. Gaines began working for the Rock Island Railroad which is now the Union Pacific Railroad. He continued to work there until 1990. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waurika.

"During the 1988 football season he served as color commentator, broadcasting for an area radio station. Mr. Gaines had also been awarded the Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Community Service Award. He contributed in several areas in the First Baptist Church such as department head for Department C, trustee and serving on the youth committee two years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waurika.

"Survivors include two children, a son, Mat Gaines of Coleman and a daughter, Gina Gaines Bennett of Dallas; his wife, Velda of the home in Waurika; two daughters and son-in-law, Laura Gaines of New York, Carol and son-in-law, Eric Olds and granddaughter, Cayla Lauren of Wichita Falls; a son, Cory Gaines of the home in Waurika; one brother, Max Gaines of Euless; and his parents, Dennis and Grace Gaines of Coleman."
