"The Taylor family was of Norman origin coming from Taillefer, the minstrel of William the Conqueror. They settled in Kent, where they were lords of the manor of Shadockhurse. There Matthew Taylor were born in 1555, and according to Burke, he was the ancestory to the Virginia family. His son John, who died in 1658, had a son, Col. John Taylor (James ?), who came to Virginia circa 1635 from Chester County, England, settled in New Kent County, and died in Rappahanock County August 30, 1698. His seal ring, engraved with crest and motto, has descended to the present generation."
