Kellie P. Greear

(May 10, 1902 - March 17, 1907)

"Within a few weeks after Kelly died, cousins were visiting and sleeping in his bed which had been moved to the other side of the room. They were acting up so William Tipton told them they had better quiet down or that bed would be yanked out from under them. Around 9 pm the bed zoomed across the room. The children wouldn't get back in the bed so William said he would try it. Pretty soon the bed moved to the other side of the room again. This phenomenon came to be a great curiosity in Coeburn, Virginia. Soon people came from all over to see the bed that moved. Once they put corn around the bed posts on the floor. When the bed moved they discovered 4 circles of corn on the floor where the bed had been. It apparently had floated over to the other side of the room.

"Once Florence was playing at piling corn up, to see how high a pile she could get. Her mother noticed that the pile was much higher than normal. Amazingly high for such a young child. When asked who had piled the corn she answered that Kelly had done it. Tearfully her mother told her that Kelly was there, to which Florence replied that he certainly was there. When she turned around Kelly was gone so Florence went looking for him. A short while later a bird flew in the window. Florence picked it up and played with it for an hour or so and then it flew away. In the meantime (this part of the story I need to get clarified) they had moved Kelly's bed back to the position it had occupied while Kelly was alive. From that day on, the bed never moved again." (This Kelly story is from an interview with Anita Greear Seipelt on June 15, 1996 by Mary South.)

Birth and death dates from Scott County Virginia Cemetery Records, Vol. 5 compiled by Phyllis Louise Willits Peterson, 1991.
