Marlene Savage -- Gsavage790@aol.com, Samuel Fountain Descendants -- Marlene Savage Web Site -- 20 May 02, (http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gmgerot&id=I133), provides the following information on John Fountain:

"John Fountain, Sr., was born on his father's plantation (farm) in Guilford Co., NC in 1803. He was the third son in the family and the sixth child overall. His parents had moved to Guilford Co. about 1797, according to land records, and the family is listed in the 1800 Census of the county."

"John's father, Samuel, died and his will was probated in 1825, in Guilford Co. By the terms of that will, John and his brothers, Andrew and Eli were to share equally in the portion of the plantation which lay east of the road which ran south from Greensboro to the county line at Mendenhall's Mill. (Brother William was to inherit the land west of the road, including the family home, although he was to share it with his mother until she died.) John also inherited his horse, saddle and bridle; one bed and bedding; two pair of wagon wheels which were not put together; along with "all of the property he claims as his own"; and one writing desk."

"There is no indication that John and Hannah ever lived on his share of the land, as land records in 1826 show him selling his share to his brothers Eli and Andrew. Possibly he farmed a portion of the land from the estate of his father-in-law. In 1825, John had married Hannah Trotter, daughter of Ephraim Trotter and Mary 'Polly' Guessford Trotter. The Trotter family had lived in the southern section of Guilford Co., in the Hickory Creek area since about 1787. Possibly John Fountain farmed the land of one or more of the young Trotter heirs."

"John and Hannah became the parents of ten children. Although some researchers indicate there was at least one child who died young, no proof has been found."

"In the spring of 1847, John and Hannah, all ten children, and 'other relatives,' including Hannah's mother, joined a wagon train and left NC. Hannah's youngest brother, Edward Oldman Trotter, was already living in the southeast section of Johnson Co., IA. In June of that year, the Fountain wagons arrived in Johnson Co., and John and Hannah bought 80 acres, across the road from Edward Trotter and settled there. The man they bought the land from was John Trout who appears to have been a brother, or cousin, to Edward Trotter's wife Sarah. John Trout would become a son-in-law to John Fountain -- twice, as he would eventually marry daughters Sarah Jane and Nancy."

"In the 1850 Census of Johnson Co., John and Hannah were listed in Dwelling # 44 of Pleasant Valley Twp. John and Hannah spent the rest of their lives on that land in Johnson Co., and when they died they were buried in the cemetery across the lane from their log home. Eight of their children remained in IA and are buried there. Only Elizabeth, who died in Minnesota, and John Jr, who died in Montana, are not buried in Iowa.
