Samuel Wood Greer

(August 7, 1797 - December 4, 1881)

"On the 11th day of September 1838, Samuel W. Greer and his family left Franklin County, Virginia in the company with Webbs, Pollards, and others numbering nearly a hundred "whites and blacks" drove over the Alleghany Mountains, through Tennessee and Kentucky, crossing the Ohio River at what was then called Parker's Ferry into Gallatin County, Illinois, crossing the Mississippi River at Alton, landed in Monroe County, Missouri, on the 31st day of October 1838, coming all the way in wagons. Samuel Wood Greer lived in Monroe County, Missouri until his death, which occured December 4, 1851. He made several trips back to Virginia, and on one of these trips back to Virginia in the year 1860 married his second wife, Nancy Divers, a daughter of Aquilla Divers, who was a son of Rebecca Greer Divers. After the death of Samuel Wood Greer, this second wife went back to Virginia (Franklin County) and married an Old School Baptist preacher named George W. Kelly. Samuel Wood Greer and Frances Dogged (Pollard) Greer are buried on the old Lee Willis farm, about seven miles southwest of Paris, Monroe County, Missouri." (John Franklin Greer's Record, pages 3 and 4.) (Lois Temple FGS 967.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: John Franklin Greer is given credit for preserving the records of his father, Joseph Hampton Greer. These writings were used to compile "The Greer Family," which appeared in PIONEER FAMILIES OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1935 by Marshall Wingfield, pages 85 - 95, with additions by the author. It appears that either John Franklin Greer or Joseph Hampton Greer later revised "The Genealogy of the Greer Family." I have copies of all three of these writings. In the earlier Greer work and Wingfield's work, the death date of Samuel Wood Greer is given as December 4, 1881 is used. In the revised work the date was changed to December 4, 1851. Lois Temple gives a date of December 4, 1861. Carolyn Beal in ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS gives December 4, 1881. It appears that 1881 was the correct death year and the other incorrect dates were results of typographic errors.)
