Isom Paul Langley

(February 24, 1828 - February 9, 1917)

"Isom P. Langley and Nancy Bear married 24 July 1851. He was in the cavalry during the Civil War. They lived in the Copeland Ridge Community and across Terre Noire Creek near Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church. A set of twins and a set of triplets were also born to Isom and Nancy, and all died at an early age. Nancy and Isom were faithful church members. Isom professed faith in Christ, was baptized, and joined Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in 1846. On 1 December 1848, he became a charter member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at Copeland Ridge, where he was a member until his death in 1917. He served as church clerk. He outlived all but three of his children, dying fifteen days short of age ninety. He was the last charter member of Pleasant Hill to die. Isom P. Langley, J. N. Miller, and J. W. Miller started the Arkadelphia Signal newspaper in 1881 and renamed it the Clipper in 1882. It later was sold to Stephen P. Meador and today is the Siftings Herald. In June of 1911, the Langleys had a reunion celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at Langley's Spring (one mile north of Cross Roads Baptist Church, near the Randolph monument). Over 750 people attended. It was said that the Langleys had taken over forty orphans into their home. Again, in July of 1913, another reunion was held at Copeland Ridge at the old church with over 500 attending. At that time, Isom and Nancy had over a hundred descendants. Nancy lived to age seventy-seven, as did her brothers, William and Elias. Isom died three and one half years after Nancy. They were married for over sixty two years."
