"Nannie Mae McCaul told me a story about how badly she resented her father. Had a quick temper. Her brother, Randell's brother in law had a motor cycle and gave her a ride home. She was about 14 and didn't want to go but her girlfriends challenged her. When she got home the boy helped her off the motor cycle by holding on to her hand. When she got inside her dad claimed he saw him kiss her and beat her badly. Even kicked her when she was down and she thinks her back problems are due to it.
"She also told a story about him beating her brother, Charles, for going to a black church revival meeting to listen to them sing. Their dad spanked Charles and then sat down to rest, then got back up to spank him again. By the third time, Nannie Mae jumped up and told him he wouldn't beat him any more, she wouldn't allow it. Charles ran for the door and down the road. Her father told her where the door was and she left also. Went and stayed with her brother Randell."
