"James Huett Holland was born in Franklin County, Virginia 28 November 1844. He was the son of Peter Lewis and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Holland. His siblings were John Carlus, Frances, Mary, Ann, Thaddeus Prmbroke, Lewis, Timothy and Samuel Holland. The lived on the family farm on what is now the Old Carriage Road in Glade Hill, Virginia. In March 1864, at the age of 19, James joined Company K of the 10th Virginia Cavalry. This unit fought against Union General Grant, who was trying to outflank Lee's Army on its way to defend Richmond. In late 1864, they were stationed at Ream's Station near Petersburg, scouting all around, even having to abandon their horses to help fight alongside the infantry units. Upon Lee's retreat from Petersburg in April 1865, the 10th Virginia Cavalry was ordered to help defend the Confederate Army on its march to Appomattox Court House. During the Retreat on 7 April 1865, the 10th was involved in a skirmish with, and defeated a unit of the Union Army at High Bridge near Farmville, Virginia, and captured Union General Gregg and his entire staff. The 10th Cavalry was still fighting southwest of Appomattox Court House when they heard of General Lee's surrender on 9 April 1865. Rather than risk losing their weapons and horses, they turned toward Lynchburg and finally made their way home, thus avoiding having to "swallow a yellow dog" (take the oath of allegiance to the Union). After the war, in September 1868, James married Elvina Housman. They built a house on the Old Carriage Road - it stands abandoned today. James and Elvina had eight children: Thomas Alexander; Fannie Elizabeth; William Robert; Victoria Ann; George Peter; Eula Mae; Hettie Belle; and Elise Parker. On September 15, 2002, he, along with his two brothers, John Carlus and Thaddeus Pembroke were given a Confederate Memorial Marker Dedication which was attended by numerous family members, the Fincastle Rifles Camp of the SVC and the Jubal Early Chapter of the UDC. His grave is marked with a Confederate tombstone." (Confederate of the Month - Each month the Jubal Early Chapet of the UDC features a Confederate Ancestor. The Ancestor of the Month for Januray 2003 is James Huett Holland. He is the great-great- granduncle of Pat Early and the Jubal Early Chapter is proud to present his story.
