"Philip Younce was the first of the name to come to America, he having emigrated from Holland about 1700 and settled in New Amsterdam (New York). He had one noted son, John, born in 1748 who was a blacksmith and shod the horses of General Washington and his aides, throughout the Revolution. He was twice captured and twice escaped the British and after the war moved to Germantown, near Winston-Salem, North Carolina, coming later to what is now Wautauga County and settling near the head of New River. He married Rhoda Foutz and raised a large family, one of whom was Solomon who married (second wife) Louise Lewis. They had ten children, the eldest being Charlotte who married Franklin Greer."
