Billie Huffaker

Billie Fleming, 99 of Abilene, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2016. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Elmwood Memorial Park. Arrangement are under the direction of Piersall Funeral Directors.

Billie was born on April 9, 1916 in Handley, Texas, which today is part of eastern Fort Worth, to William and Edith Huffaker. Billie attended college at Mary Hardin-Baylor University and graduated in 1939 with a degree in Business, the first class of female Business graduates from the university. In 1940, Billie married Robert Fleming and in 1946 they moved to Abilene and opened their own business, The Royal Shop, and later, Fleming Upholstery. Billie put her business degree to work, serving as the bookkeeper as well as a decorator. 

Billie volunteered around town whenever she could. She was a Pink Lady at Hendrick Medical Center for many years and helped where ever she was needed at the First Baptist Church, where she was a member since moving to Abilene in 1946. Billie was also a member of the Abilene Women's Club.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Edith Mary Huffaker, her husband Robert Fleming, sisters Dixie Huffaker and Mabel Hillman, her brothers Johnny Huffaker and Sam Huffaker and daughter-in-law Carol Lynn Fleming. She is survived by her children Gail Wheeler and husband Albert; and James Fleming; grandchildren Daniel Wheeler and wife Laurie, Debi Wheeler, Cheryl Magnuson, Meghan Pry and Meredith Whitaker and husband Justin; and great grandchildren Brittnay Murdoch, Kaylie Magnuson, Braden Pry, Bryan Pry, Camdyn Whitaker and Logan Whitaker.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial be made in Billie's name to the International Rescue Committee, 3303 N. 3rd St, Abilene, Texas 79603.
