Raleigh Mayes
(August 20, 1802 - September 23, 1869)
"Raleigh Mayes and his wife Emily made the trip to Missouri on horseback in 1832. He settled on the limestone bluffs of eastern Lincoln County. He purchased a small tract of land from a pre-empted settler. Raleigh Mayes was constable of Hurricane Township. The fees collected from this office gave him ready money and the trips to the county sear at Troy and his duties as Constable gave him the opportunity to buy land sold for taxes. Because of this he acquired a large number of land tracts that with his slaves he cleared and farmed. He and his wife owned over thirty slaves at the opening of the Civil War and is listed in the tax list of Lincoln county as the largest slave holder in Lincoln County at that time." (The Kemper Book, by Clarence Cannon, 1957, page 17 - taken from the History of Lincoln County 1888, page 320.)
"He gave each of his children at the time of their marriage a 200 acre farm and stock and the necessary equipment to operate it." (The Kemper Book, by Clarence Cannon, 1957, page 18.)
In 1855, Raleigh Mayes was the director of the first board of directors of the Agriculture and Mechanical Society. In 1837, he was the President of first board of education of Lost Creek School, now Elsberry.
