Fielding Turner Cantrell

(December 5, 1817 - )

"Fielding Turner Cantrell accumulated a large fortune, and at the time of his death was one of the wealthiest citizens of Spartanburg. His wife died before he did, and there were no children. His will was a peculiar one: in it he stipulated bequests to each and all of his nephews and nieces, the remainder of his estate to be divided among his "poor and deserving kin." The question arose who were the "poor and deserving kin," and the matter was referred to the court. The decision was that after paying to the heirs named in the will the portions they were to receive, that the remainder should be equally divided between the "nearest of his kin." The estate proved to be much larger than anticipated, so his brothers and sisters received a considerable amount."
