"John Andrew Scott was born 9 December 1861 in DeSota County, Mississippi, to John and Margaret Fitzgerald Scott. As a youth, he migrated with his family to White County, Arkansas, where he grew upon the family farm. It is believed that John Scott moved his family from Mississippi to escape the havoc of the Civil War. John Andrew Scott and Mary Frances Birdwell were married on 30 December 1880. Shortly thereafter, they moved from White County to a farm in Clark County, which was located about eight miles east of Gurdon. They cleared the land for farming, struggling to survive. Through perseverance, they were succussful both in farming and in raising their family. John Andrew and Mary Frances Scott were parents of twelve childre. (List with dates and spouses are given.) John Andrew Scott was a devoted father, a life-long Baptist and active member of his church; highly respected in his community; and a gentle, sensitive person. He is laid to rest next to his wife, Mary Frances, and their deceased children in Easley Cemetery east of Gurdon."
