Enoch Spruill Phelps

(Abt, 1774 - 1848)

"Enoch Phelps is shown in 1820 Edgefield County, South Carolina census with James S. Phelps; it is thought that they were brothers. They both came to Butler County, Alabama in the 1820's. James S. stayed in Butler County, but Enoch went to Newton County, Mississippi where he died." (Kirby J. Phelps, 109 Sunset Drive, Greenville, Alabama 36037.)

Enoch Spruill Phelps lived in vicinity of Shaws Creek, Edgefield District, South Carolina until about 1822. Enoch was a deacon in Mt. Phillipi Baptist Church in 1818. He settled in the Shaw Creek area on the Barrington land in 1799.

His initial S. is based on membership list from Town Creek Baptist Church , Dallas Co, AL. Dated 5 July 1823, showing Enoch S. and Mary PHELPS accepted by letter in membership. Son Enoch Spruill is listed as Spruill in 1825.
