Sherman Donald Armstrong

(January 25, 1925 - August 15, 2004)

"Sherman Donald Armstrong, beloved husband of 54 years to Nita Keeney Armstrong, went to be with the Lord on August 15, 2004. He is survived by his wife and three children: Kay Gerfers and husband, Butch, Sherman Armstrong and wife, Paula, all of San Antonio, and Patricia Armstrong of Perth, Australia. Grandchildren include Trey, Andrew and Joe Gerfers, Rhys and Adelaide Bevilaqua, and Ethan and Brett Armstrong. His surviving sister is Jeanie Humber of Hubbard, Texas, and surviving brother is Tom Armstrong of Abilene, Texas. Siblings who have preceded him in death are Alta Lee Gooch, sister, and Harold Armstrong, brother. During World War II, Don served in the Army Air Corp in the 20th Air Corp as a ground crewman with the B-29 stationed on Saipan. After the war he returned home to Abilene and attended college for a while before moving to Topeka, Kansas, where he worked for the Topeka Steam Boiler Works for about a year. He once again returned to Abilene and began working in his father's business, Abilene Plumbing Supply Company. This would be his lifelong occupation. When his father purchased a plumbing supply business in San Antonio, Don moved with his young family in 1955 to begin Armstrong Plumbing Supply. At the time of his retirement in 1992, his business had grown to four locations: two in San Antonio, one in New Braunfels and one in Austin. Ferguson Enterprises, an international distribution business, now operates branches from these locations. A well-respected businessman, Don was a past president of the Wholesale Distributors Association and a former board member of the American Supply Association. His civic involvement included long time membership in the Alamo Kiwanis Club. In the Greater San Antonio Builders Association he served as a board member and officer. Don was also active in the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. Shortly after moving to San Antonio he and his wife joined Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was recently honored by being elected a Life Deacon. He also taught children's Sunday School for over 30 years. Don was actively involved in politics and often worked in local campaigns supporting candidates and issues with his time and money. He was the first PTA President of Oak Grove Elementary when the school opened in the 1960's in the Northeast Independent School District. After retiring from his business, he was active in the mentor program at Oak Grove and was honored with PTA Life Membership." (Obituary.)

Following service in World War II with the Army Air Corp, Armstrong returned to his home in Abilene and attended college.
