LANETT - Mr. John Robert Coggins Sr., 72, of Lanett, died Sunday Feb. 21, 2010.

He was born Monday, Jan. 31, 1938 in LaFayette to the late Sherwood and Louise Purcell Coggins. Mr. Coggins was a graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering.

"Cowpapa," as he is affectionately known to his grandchildren, retired from Quantum Chemical, having spent most of his time working in Illinois and Iowa.

After retiring, he came back to Chambers County to run the family farm, while taking part in various civic activities. Mr. Coggins was a supportive influence in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jerry Williams Coggins of Lanett; a daughter Cinda (Ben) Mosher of Iowa City, Iowa; two sons, John Robert Coggins Jr. of Lanett and Richard S. (Janet) Coggins of Beaumont, Texas; eight grandchildren, Devyn Lewis, Grant Lewis, Peter Mosher, Henry Mosher, Will Coggins, Henry Coggins, Andrew Coggins and Bonnie Coggins; a half-sister, Jeanette Boehme of Orange, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Joe B. Williams of Valley and Judy and David Benninger of Lanett; and his aunt, Karen (Lanny) Bledsoe of Valley.

The family will greet friends Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 6 until 8 p.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to Chattahoochee Hospice, 6 Medical Park North, Valley, Alabama, 36854.

Services have been entrusted to McCarthy Funeral Home of West Point.
