"When tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right there in your heart."

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a great man. After a valiant battle with leukemia, Michael David Elliot went to his eternal home on Monday, April 18, 2016, at the age of 53. He was born and raised in Baton Rouge, and had been a resident of Central for most of his life. After attending Central High School in the late Seventies, he began work and retired from the Department of Transportation and Development, where he found his home in the asphalt lab at the Materials and Testing Laboratory. Through his gritty work ethic, his quick studies, and his innovative mind, he became an expert in asphalt testing and quality, thus earning him the nickname "Asphalt Mike", a name that came to be known by his peers throughout the state of Louisiana. After twenty years of testing asphalt, he turned his skills to teaching and moved to the Louisiana Transportation Research Center, where he made even more lifelong connections. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, his brother Stephen, and his father Leland. He is survived by his mother, Carolyn; his wife, Sterrie; his two sons, Michael (Megan) and Colton; his four grandchildren: Austin, Alexis, Aiden, and Savannah; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, April 21, 2016, from 4 pm until 7 pm. Visitation will resume on Friday at 9:30 am and will continue until service at 11 am in the chapel. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Special thanks to his sister-in-law, Cindy Forbes, and to the doctors and nursing staff at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the Pennington Cancer Center.
