Miss Mary Poage Lawrence, 84, of 2401 13th St., granddaughter of John Poage, founder of Ashland, died at 5:15 a.m. Saturday in King’s Daughters’ Hospital following an extended illness.
Miss Lawrence was born October 20, 1894, at Ashland, a daughter of the late Alfred R. and Evelyn Poage Lawrence. She was a graduate of Christ Hospital of Nursing in Cincinnati, was head nurse for Dr. Harry J. Stone, M.D., for 37 years, and served as a nurse at the Stephenson Clinic and at King’s Daughters’ Hospital.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as treasurer of the Altrust Sunday School class and was active in the church’s women’s association. Miss Lawrence was a charter member and first president of the Ashland Business and Professional Woman’s Club, and was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, Christ Hospital Nurses Alumni Association, The Ashland YWCA, the National Nurse Association and was a Kentucky colonel. She also sponsored an Indian child through the Christian Children’s Fund.
A member of the Board of Directors of the Ramey Children’s Home for more than 30 years, Miss Lawrence was also on the board at the Hack Estep Home for Boys and was a member of the Mac Club of Greenup.
Surviving are several cousins, including, Harold M. Duesler of Ashland.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lazear Funeral Home by the Rev. James Rucker and the Rev. Lee Gore. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
The body is at the funeral home, where friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boyd County Council for Aging, First Presbyterian Church, Ramey Children’s Home, or a favorite charity.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Harry J. Stone and Dr. Horace G. Skaggs. Active pallbearers will be John White, David White, Harold V. White and John Todd.
