William J. Harrison, age 29, was mustered into Capt. George H. Sweet's Company, 15th Regiment Texas Cavalry Jan 1, 1862 at Blanco, Texas by G. H. Sweet for a period of 12 months.
On March 10, 1862 Capt. George H. Sweet's Company was attached to the 2nd Regiment of Johnson's Brigade Texas Mounted Volunteers at McKinney, Texas.
The records indicate that he was a Private from muster until March 3, Sergent from March 3 until April 29, then a Private until June 30. He was detached to Camp Lee from June 30, 1862 to April 30, 1863. He was promoted from Private to Sergent on January 7, 1863.
William was captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Ark., Jan. 11, 1863. He is listed on the Roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas, Ill., dated Feb. 8, 1863.
Paroled at Camp Douglas, Ill., April 3, 1863, and delivered at City Point, Va., April 10, 1863.
Appears on a Register of Episcopal Church Hospital, Williamsburg, Va. on a complaint of "Diarrhoea Ch" and was admitted on April 28, 1863 and released for duty on May 13, 1863. He must have been given leave immediately upon release from the hospital as 9 months later his son Benjamin Franklin Harrison was born on Feb 2, 1864 in Texas.
William J. Harrison died Aug 29 [1863] with Cholera Morbus, near Chickamauga Creek, Tenn. (This was about 3 weeks prior to the Battle of Chickamauga".)
