James Lewis Boggus
(March 25, 1901 - December 2, 1966)
1930 Cameron County, Texas census, Brownsville.
1940 Cameron County, Texas census, Harlingen.
McALLEN - The Boggus name has hung on Ford dealerships across the Rio Grande Valley since the Great Depression, before McAllen had a library and when the University of Texas-Pan American was simply Edinburg College.
This year, the company celebrates its 75th anniversary and the honor of being one of the few Ford dealerships in the nation owned by the same family all that time, according to Ford corporate headquarters.
With dealerships in McAllen and Harlingen, Boggus is the third largest dealer in the Valley, selling more than 1,700 cars last year at its McAllen dealership alone.
"I remember sorting parts bins and washing cars at the dealership in Harlingen, the one my dad ran," said Bob Boggus, the 53-year old president of the company. "Now, I'm in charge of the whole show."
Bob's grandfather started the family business in 1933.
A former accountant and car washer at C.R. McDaniel Ford in McAllen, Lewis Boggus was 20 when he forged ahead.
After expanding the business, he died in 1966 and his son Frank Boggus, who is now 80, took over.
Bob has been running the operation since 1980.
After a life time working in the automotive industry in the Rio Grande Valley, Bob Boggus said he sees a changing industry, especially with struggles the United States' automotive giantsĀ - Ford, GM and Chrysler - are facing.
