"Mrs. Martha E. Hillis, 88, widow of John Hillis, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amanda Bowman, in Dunlap, Tuesday morning, November 23, at 7 o'clock. The remains were brought to McMinnville in a High Funeral Home ambulance and funeral services and burial took place at Friendship. John W. High conducted the funeral. Mrs. Hillis was a native of Van Buren county. She was born December 18, 1859, the daughter of Ben Payne and Amanda Payne. Besides her daughter mentioned above, the deceased is survived by three sons, Virgil Hillis, Huntsville, Ala., Sam Hillis, Oak Ridge, and Dewey Hillis, Campaign; three daughters, Mrs. Violet Brown, Campaign, Mrs. Frances Johnson, Hill Creek, and Mrs. Julia Johnson, Campaign; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Cope, Texas, and Mrs. Lou Bouldin, Spencer; and two brothers, O.B. Payne, Campaign, and Ben Payne, New Market, Ala. Arrangements were by High Funeral Home." (Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN. 3 Dec 1948.)
