Dr. John Coleman M. D.

"Dr. John Coleman moved from Coleman's Mill, North Carolina to Alabama after he married the second time to Judith Wade." 1850 Richland County, South Carolina census, Town of Columbia, Lunatic Asylum (now South Carolina State Hospital). John Coleman; date admitted: 1848; age 62; Occupation: Physician; Birthplace: Alabama; Other comments: Insane (categories in this column include "Insane" or "Epileptic"). Records of the South Carolina State Hospital (asylum) show that Dr. Coleman was admitted to the facility July 5, 1848, and discharged July 11, 1851.
Butler County, Alabama Probate records show guardianship for Dr. John Coleman continuing until 1855-1856. W. H. Crenshaw (Walter Henry) filed final estate administration papers on Dr. John Coleman in 1857-1858.
Dr. John's descendants in Butler County recalled Dr. John Coleman's tombstone being in the Coleman Cemetery near Manningham, where all the markers but one were destroyed many decades ago by a "storm" (probably a tornado) and then by vandalism.
