Rachel Ann died when Mary Fynetta was 4 years old. Mr. Gowens remarried a widow with children, who was extremely cruel to Rachel Ann's children. She pulled them out of school to work, although the rest of the children of the family attended school. Mary Fynetta did not learn to read until after her marriage to George Albert.
