"Rash of County Accidents Result in One Fatality By Billie Mercer - Three accidents occurring on Friday, July 26th resulted in a fatality in one of the accidents and injuries to others. According to Department of Public Safety Officer Pat Salas, The second five-vehicle accident resulted in a fatality, which occurred at 3:20 p. m. Friday, approximately 2.5 miles north of Coleman on Highway 283. The chain of events occurred when a 1999 Chevrolet van, driven by Demarco Upshaw, 30, from Abilene was traveling southbound and while traveling, came upon a construction zone where there were four vehicles stopped as a result of a flag man holding back the cars. Each car was waiting until a pilot vehicle could escort them into the construction zone. Upshaws van collided with the back end of a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Tammy McDorman, 43, of Coleman. McDormans son Bubba Shaw, 18, was a passenger in the pickup. McDormans pickup in turn collided with a 1996 Suburban driven by Chrissi Hail, 40, of Coleman. The Hail vehicle then collided with a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Richard Bryan, 30, of Bronte. A passenger in the Camry vehicle was Bryans wife Cassie, 22, who was transported to the Coleman County Medical Center. She has been dismissed from Coleman County Medical Center. In turn, the Bryan Toyota collided with a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Chester Airheart, 38, of Brady. Traveling with Airheart was his 11 year-old daughter. Neither were injured in the accident. Tammy McDorman, driver of the Ford Ranger pickup and her son Bubba Shaw, were transported to CCMC where McDorman was pronounced dead. Shaw was transported by Airflight from CCMC to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit."
