Reuben Sebree

(Abt, 1775 - April 19, 1848)

"The Petersburg, Boone County, Kentucky, cemetery contains a five-foot shaft with the inscription, "Reuben Sebree died Apr. 19, 1848, Aged 73 years", while on a separate slab marker is an inscription, "Reubin Sebree Died Apr. 19, 1843, in his 73rd year", though the readings were said to be subject to error because of erosion and lichen growth on the stones. Salyers used the 1848 date and quotes the book BOONE COUNTY CEMETERIES as corroboration. Reuben was baptized Oct. 1800 in the Stamping Ground Baptist Church, Scott Co, Kentuck. He took an active part in the War of 1812, though he could not be admitted as a soldier because of his age. Reuben was a successful farmer. His will is dated 26 May 1841; Will Book E pg 158; Boone County, Kentucky, 6 or 26 May 1841; and lists his heirs; Howard, Erastus, Norman, Jane, a dau of my dau Maria, Seltina, a dau of my son Madison. Research by Ed SEBREE (page 94?), a retired army colonel, from Western Kentucky, visited the 6th Army Research Library in San Francisco, Years ago, checking old Civil War records. He found a Reuben Sebree- "during the Civil War, a reputable man worth some $40,000 in land and slaves, with 5 sons in Morgan's command. He was released from Camp Chase, a Union Prison Camp near Columbus, Ohio. Upon posting bail in the amount of $1,500, and taking the Oath of Allegiance, He was quoted as speaking favorably of the food and sanitary conditions in the camp which was contrary to its general reputation, so he could get back home soon." Reuben SEBREE's will is recorded in Boone Co, Kentucky Will Book (L ?), page 158, dated May 26, 1841, Probated June 1848. His wife is mentioned with his estate to be divided equally among my (his) children: Howard, Erastus T., Norman, Jane - daughter of my daughter Maria, and Seltina - daughter of my son Madison. He and his wife are buried in the Petersburg, Kentucky Cemetery." (Echos of the Past, Thomason, Volume 2, page 94.)
