Individual Details

Phillip Byrd Winn

(September 15, 1786 - March 31, 1870)

"Philip Byrd was an architect and builder by profession, but was also engaged in the mercantile business in Winchester, KY, retiring in September 1815 from the mercantile business to devote his entire time to farming. He was a magistrate of Clark County, Kentucky, for many years, and as the eldest magistrate became sheriff of the county in 1843. As one of the magistrates he presided on numerous occasions with two associates, under the existing law, over the Clark Court of Quarter Sessions, which had jurisdiction at that time of both civil and criminal cases. The three justices sat in banc, impaneled the grand jury, and tried various offenders. Henry Clay was the prosecuting attorney, or attorney for the Clark Court of Quarter Sessions; and in its records will be found quaint entries. Philip B. Winn was an unusually handsome man of commanding appearance, standing six feet, four and a half inches in his stocking feet. He, too, was loved by children, who were devotedly attached to him. He played the violin and sang scores of ancient ballads, which were sung in England three hundred years ago, and which were doubtless handed down to him by his father. He knew countless games which he taught to the children, and one famous lullaby which he passed down to my father, and which I have never heard sung by anyone else, known as "Ho Dinky Doddy."
