Thomas Dudley Sir

( - )

"Sir Thomas Dudley came from England to America about the beginning of hostilities that culminated in the Revolution, first landing in Virginia, and from thence went to North Carolina where he married and enlisted in the cause of the Colonists. The following is copied from "Heitman's Historical Register" of the officers of the Continental army, 1775 - 1783: "Thomas Dudley, musician 6th North Carolina in 1776. Ensign 10th North Carolina, 1778; lieutenant 20th June, 1779; wounded at Eutaw Springs 8th September 1781; retired 1st January 1783." The regiment was commanded by Col. Abraham Shepherd 17th April 1777. It is not known when he died, but family tradition states that he was drowned in attempting to cross a river with his command. For services rendered by him a land warrant was issued to his assignee or executor, Amos Johnson, Esq. He was very decided in his hostility to English rule, and his estates in England were accordingly confiscated. His wife Sarah bore him one son and three daughters."
