"FORMER DEPUTY SHERIFF GAIL BOGIE DIES AT 55. Bogie served in Madison County Sheriff's Department for more than 20 years before retiring last year because of an illness. When Kara Burton was a student at Madison Central High School, she would visit her mother, Gail Bogie, at work all the time when classes let out. Although she admits most of the time she simply wanted to ask for some money, Kara said she loved to just say 'hello' and see how her mom's day was going. Gail worked at the Madison County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff for more than 20 years. After retiring less than a year ago, Gail left behind great friends at her job. On Monday, she died after an illness, leaving her family and those same friends with the memory of a woman her said everyone loved. "She could always make you smile," Kara said. "She was easy going and everyone loved her as soon as they met her. She was just a special person. She had a lot of friends at the sheriff's department. Evelyn Thomas, Madison County deputy sheriff and dispatcher, said she will always remember laughing, telling stories and enjoying her time with Gail. Evelyn's father, former Madison County Sheriff Nolan Winkler, was the one who hired Gail in 1979. Evelyn said Gail was the first one who saw and handled all of the paperwork, summons, warrants and subpoenas, from the courthouse. "If I had trouble or I got upset, she would get upset." Evelyn said. "She didn't like to see anyone upset ever. Everybody just loved being around her. She'll be sadly missed." When she retired in June 2003, the sheriff's department had a retirement dinner in Gail's honor. Sheriff Cecil "Dude" Cochran presented Gail with a plaque commemorating her service to the department. Evelyn said many people attended the dinner at the courthouse to give thanks to Gail. "When she retired it might have been due to her health, but she also just wanted spend time with her baby grandson," Evelyn said. "She enjoyed her family so much." Gail was a part of the Madison County Sheriff's Department family, Evelyn said. Although no plans have been decided yet, she said the department, which will serve as honorary pallbearers, would like to provide an escort for Gail's funeral service. Deputy County Clerk and former Deputy Sheriff Sarah Noland, said even after she left the sheriff's department, she would eat lunch and take breaks to visit Gail. The friends went on a couple of overnight shopping trips and were always able to talk about their problems, Sarah said. "We were close," Sarah said. "She was just a very good friend and a good person to have on your side. I just miss her." Madison County Judge Executive Kent Clark worked with Gail the 10 and half years he has been at the courthouse. However, he said he has known her since the days when they both attended Madison Central High School. "She just absolutely always had a smile on her face and was willing to help people," Clark said. "I don't think I ever saw her mad. She enjoyed her job, and she was just that type of person. We're all very sad to lose her." Gail, a member of the Flatwoods Christian Church, is survived by her husband, June; daughter, Kara Burton; son, Bryan: grandson, Brett; and sisters Bonnie Russell, Beulah Gorman, Mable Rymell and Judy Martin. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Turpin Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with burial following at the Flatwoods Cemetery."
